neil diamond makes a shocking announcement On he’s family
Sweet Caroline’s true meaning with song taking just ’30 minutes’ to write
Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline has become an anthem for the England football teams in recent years, but fans are still unaware of the true meaning behind it
Sweet Caroline will resonate around the Euro 2024 final venue later today as England fans bellow out the beloved anthem.
But many fans won’t be aware of the meaning behind Neil Diamond’s classic. The singer even claims his 1969 hit was crafted in just 30 minutes.
In a 2014 interview on the Today show, Diamond revealed his ex-wife Marcia Murphey was the true inspiration behind the song. But Diamond was unable to fit her name into the tune.
He explained: “It’s actually about my former wife Marcia. But I couldn’t get Marcia into the three syllable name that I needed and so I had Caroline Kennedy’s name there from years ago in one of my books and I tried sweet Caroline.
That worked, it didn’t work with Marcia so I couldn’t tell her that I dedicated the song to her.””
The couple married in 1969, staying together until the mid 1990s. They share two sons together. Murphey was Diamond’s second wife, after he married his high-school sweetheart, Jaye Posner. The pair split after four years of marriage. He married third wife Katie McNeil in 2012.
Neil Diamond, the legendary singer-songwriter, has described the creation of his iconic hit ‘Sweet Caroline’ as “some kind of magic”. He revealed: “It was very unexpected, it was last minute, the whole thing took about a half-hour. It took about a half-hour to write it.”
The tune ‘Sweet Caroline’ has become an anthem for England football fans, especially after DJ Tony Parry played it at Wembley following England’s 2-0 triumph over Germany, propelling them into the quarter-finals.
