Police are investigating the death of a woman in northern Queensland as a homicide.

A man was arrested almost two hours after the woman was found with life-threatening injuries at a home in Mighell, about 100km south of Cairns, about 4.15pm.

Emergency crews attempted to treat the woman but she died at the scene.

Police closed part of the highway as they searched for the man, who allegedly attempted to steal a car from another woman who was nearby. (Nine)

A man allegedly left in a vehicle before police arrived.

At 4.30pm, the same car collided with a truck on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket.

The truck’s driver was not injured, and the man in the vehicle fled into the nearby area, police said.

Part of the highway was closed as officers searched for the man, who allegedly attempted to steal a car from another woman nearby.

The 51-year-old man was found and taken into custody just after 6pm.

Police said the arrested man and the woman who died were known to each other.

Residents and motorists were still advised to avoid the area of the Bruce Highway as police investigate.

A police spokesperson said there was no further threat to public safety.
