Striker target issues potential plea to Sheffield Wednesday amid ongoing interest
Sheffield Wednesday target Duncan McGuire has discussed a possible move to the Championship this summer.
Orlando City and USMNT striker McGuire, 23, almost sealed a move to the Championship on deadline day of the winter transfer window.
He was in Lancashire trying to seal a move to Blackburn Rovers, and then in Sheffield trying to secure a move to Sheffield Wednesday after a move to Ewood Park looked dead in the water.
But Blackburn would then announce that they’d signed McGuire from Orlando, only for McGuire to quickly return to the USA after a paperwork error on Blackburn’s part.
Since, McGuire has started the new MLS season in fine form, scoring five goals in 11 games, with reports this month suggesting that the Owls have been keeping tabs on the striker.
Duncan McGuire discusses possible Blackburn Rovers move
Speaking to GOAL.com, McGuire has now opened up on his failed move to Blackburn Rovers and whether or not he’d be interested in possibly heading to the club to try and secure another transfer.
McGuire said: “It’s tough to say. That was a pretty bad mistake, a pretty bad mistake by them. I’d be open to maybe having a conversation but it would have to be a lot to get me to go back there.
On the plane ride back, I just felt like my tail was between my legs. I asked my agent how often this happens and he was like ‘This doesn’t happen’.
“I didn’t burn bridges with my teammates or have it be like ‘Oh you wanted to leave and now you’re back’. When I got back, it was like I never left.”
This comes after reports from The Athletic that Blackburn Rovers have reignited their interest in McGuire, with Rovers officials travelling to the States to re-open talks.
Orlando City have also offered McGuire a new contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of 2024.
Sheffield Wednesday handed huge Duncan McGuire hint
Two things that McGuire has said in the above comments may be very interest to Sheffield Wednesday; the fact that he’s open to talking to Blackburn suggests that he’s open to a move this summer, and that the fact that he’s somewhat hesitant about Blackburn may suggest he’d be open to Wednesday.
The Owls almost managed to hand him his Championship move on deadline day and may well have had their man if it wasn’t for Blackburn Rovers, and their comical error in sorting the paperwork.
And amid reports that Sheffield Wednesday have kept their eye on McGuire, who’s started the season brightly, it’s looking like he could quickly become hot property in the transfer market this summer.
So the Owls may not be alone in their interest in McGuire but they could well have an initial say on the matter given his comments on Blackburn and the fact that they did try hard to sign him in January.
It would remain an expensive move for Dejphon Chansiri but one that could really give Danny Rohl a top striker for next season, and also a move to would show Rohl and indeed the fans that Chansiri means business this summer.
