Six players set to depart Reading FC in summer transfer overhaul while 12 have futures in doubt
An early look at how the Reading FC squad could shape up over the summer and going into 2023/24 with another big overhaul expected
With the season’s business end drawing near and Reading’s place in the Championship all but certain, attention is now shifting to the club’s summer plans and future goals.
While Paul Ince and his players are focused on the remaining 13 league games, the manager will undoubtedly begin to consider what will happen at the end of the season.
A major team makeover occurred the previous season when prominent players including Andy Rinomhota, Josh Laurent, and John Swift all left after their contracts expired.
Up to eight players were added as free agents, while five players were signed on loan. If everything goes according to plan, Reading will be able to spend money on players for the first time in a long time during this summer’s transfer window, after the embargo is lifted and the English Football League (EFL) is happy with the team’s financial situation.
Ten senior players will see their contracts expire at the end of June, while most of the loan players—six now that Cesare Casadei joined from Chelsea at the end of the January transfer window—will go back to their original clubs.
Ince and Mark Bowen, the head of football operations, will therefore be very busy supervising the modifications and gathering a strong team for the 2023–2024 campaign.
Though it’s obvious that things could change in the upcoming months, we give our opinions below regarding the players that are most likely to stay through the end of the season, leave the team permanently, or currently have an uncertain future.
