Brian Laws raves about Nottingham Forest star after Friday night victory

Brian Laws heaped praise on Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi during Friday night’s win over Sheffield United. The Reds player scored after just a couple of minutes to give the team a perfect start on home soil.

Forest were made to work for their win but with Awoniyi in this sort of form, they’ll have a chance in every game they play. His header from a Serge Aurier cross was beautiful and gave Wes Foderingham no chance between the posts.

It’s the sixth game in succession that Awoniyi has scored for Forest. That run stretches back to the final four games of last season where the Nigerian scored the goals that helped keep Forest in the Premier League.

Laws used to play for the Reds back when Brian Clough was walking on water at the City Ground. He was a mainstay in the team during the nineties and he was very pleased with Awoniyi during the Forest win on Friday.

Laws raves about Awoniyi after Forest win

The Forest talisman is proving a real bargain for the Reds. Awoniyi penned terms at the City Ground last summer as the club paid £17.5 million for him from Union Berlin.

It proved a slow start for the striker but with 11 goals last season, he was the team’s top goalscorer in the Premier League. This time around he’s kicked things off with two goals in his opening two appearances.

Awoniyi is now showing why Forest paid such a sum to land him. He works hard, has a physical presence and perhaps more crucially, he knows where the net is.

Lots of talks goes around Morgan Gibbs-White and Brennan Johnson when it comes to who is Forest’s best player. Awoniyi is often discounted but for his goals recently, he has to be in the conversation too.

Nottingham Forest reach deal for €11m signing – Player flying on Monday

Nottingham Forest have a full agreement to sign Gonzalo Montiel, according to claims from Argentina.

TyC Sports journalist Cesar Luis Merlo writes on Twitter that the clubs today closed a deal for the 26-year-old’s transfer.

The reporter says that Nottingham Forest will pay Sevilla €11m for the fullback.

Montiel is expected to fly to England on Monday to have his medical and sign a contract with the Tricky Trees.Author of decisive penalty in World Cup 2022 final Montiel accused of rape

Earlier on Sunday, Merlo had already featured a story claiming there were ‘advanced negotiations’ for that move, and that seems to be confirmed now.

Montiel joined Sevilla in a €11m transfer from River Plate in 2021. He’d been looking for a way out of the La Liga side this summer, and had actually been heavily linked to Fulham in the past few days. The fullback was part of Argentina’s squad which won the World Cup in December.

We must recall that Merlo’s first story said Nottingham Forest also had Bologna’s Nicolas Dominguez ‘close’ to the club, so we better watch out for those negotiations as well.

Nottingham Forest now £3m short in race to sign 24-year-old defender

Nottingham Forest are edging closer to the signing of Victor Nelsson but they are still not quite at the valuation. Galatasaray are hoping to recoup the full £22 million release clause that the defender has in his contract.

According to Turkish outlet Aksam, the Reds have made another bid for the player in recent days. The bid is around £19 million but there is a growing belief that Forest will get their man in Nelsson.

Forest are in need of another central defender. Scott McKenna did look a little bit ragged against Sheffield United, whilst Felipe is currently nursing a knee injury.

The Reds do have Moussa Niakhate and Joe Worrall but they want to ensure they’re well-stocked. Nelsson would definitely provide competition for places and it seems as though he will leave this summer.

Forest might not be alone in the race to sign the 24-year-old this summer. Tottenham have been linked with the player in the past and it’s not clear whether Ange Postecoglou will look to sign another central defender.

Forest edging closer to Nelsson deal

It’s proving a bit of a strange deal this one. Ultimately, it should be noticed that anything that comes from the Turkish press should be taken with a sizeable pinch of salt.

However, since this is regarding a player at a Turkish club, it’s probably got some substance to it. Forest, it would seem, are getting closer to a deal but there’s a bit of a puzzling issue.

The Reds are only £3 million away from activating his release clause which would enable him to discuss terms with the player. Given that it’s such a small difference, it’s bizarre why they Reds haven’t just paid it.

Nelsson would be a very decent signing for Forest. He’s strong in the challenge, good in the air and would come with plenty of experience under his belt.
