The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most surprising teams in the NFL this season, as Mike Tomlin’s squad is 9-3 and atop the AFC North through 13 weeks. The Steelers picked up a critical divisional victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13 and will host the Cleveland Browns at Acrisure Stadium in Week 14.
One of the primary reasons for Pittsburgh’s success in 2024 has been the steady quarterback play. Russell Wilson has been playing clean and efficient football since taking over as the starter in Week 7, but Justin Fields did an admirable job filling in for Wilson during the first six games of the season when the veteran was dealing with a calf injury. Fields has posted a 4-2 record thus far in 2024 and totaled ten touchdowns with just two turnovers. The 25-year-old lost the starting role after Wilson returned from his injury in Week 7.
Though Fields has impressed in a handful of starts this season, the 2021 first-round pick may not be back with the Steelers next year, as Fields is set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason. With Wilson also set to hit the market, Pittsburgh could elect to re-sign the nine-time Pro Bowler and let Fields walk in free agency.
If this scenario plays out in the spring, SB Nation’s Ed Valentine believes the New York Giants could pursue the young signal caller.
The Giants are likely to select a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but if the franchise decides to pass on a young signal caller in April’s draft, signing Fields to be the starter next season would be a savvy move. The former Ohio State has shown a ton of promise this season and would be a solid veteran bridge for New York.
Though Fields has some potential, the smartest move for the Giants would be to select a young signal-caller with their first-round draft choice this offseason. But if New York isn’t sold on any of the quarterbacks in the draft, Justin Fields could be the G-Men’s starter next season.
