Sabalenka: “announces to leave and play in Saudi Arabia, they are making efforts to improve lives”
Tennis is much more than a sport at times, due to its global nature and the presence of prominent figures who the players look up to. Aryna Sabalenka delved into various topics during her press conference ahead of the 2024 WTA Finals, answering questions about her comfort playing in a country that violates women’s and LGBTQ rights. She also expressed her desire to end the year as number 1.
Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top player, is clear about her main goal in these 2024 WTA Finals. Yet, she has also been firm in addressing a controversial issue: the compatibility of hosting a top-level women’s tennis tournament in Saudi Arabia, a country where women’s fundamental rights are not guaranteed. Her responses are noteworthy and are sure to spark a wave of reactions.
Top priority: ending 2024 as the number 1 in the WTA ranking
Throughout the season, I’ve been saying that my top goal is to finish as the world’s best. I’ll do everything I can to make it happen. I know each match will be very demanding, and I’m ready to give my all and engage in great battles. It was a surprise to see myself back at number 1 a few weeks ago, and now my biggest wish is to finish there. I believe I’ve had a great year and worked hard to achieve it,” she stated before discussing the court. “The surface is much faster than in China, and the balls are lighter too. I think that suits me”, she said.
– Tactical variations in her game like drop shots
“I find it very fun to hit drop shots. If someone had told me five years ago that I would have this shot in my repertoire, I wouldn’t have believed it because I’m not very skilled with finesse. However, I managed to add it and think it’s very effective as it gives me control over my opponent, making them unsure. I gained confidence to use it in a match where I had physical issues and needed to shorten the exchanges. Since then, I’ve been using it with more purpose and effectiveness; it’s almost a natural shot now,” she concluded.
– What does it mean for her to compete in Saudi Arabia
“I have no problem playing here; I believe it’s essential to bring tennis to all corners of the world and inspire the youth. Saudi Arabia is making a significant effort to promote women’s tennis and enhance women’s lives. I’m very happy to be part of something that may make history,” argued Aryna Sabalenka, the top contender to claim the title at these 2024 WTA Finals, which mark the debut of Riyadh as the host city.
