Wimmers make decision to close State Park Speedway at hospital; Celebrate final day of racing

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) – It was the end of an era Saturday at State Park Speedway. Over the weekend the final checkered flag waved over the track.

For over six decades, fans from across the Midwest traveled to Rib Mountain to watch their favorite drivers race.

Owners Scott and Ron Wimmer are selling the speedway. They say it was a tough decision, However, it was a choice they felt they had to make. The main reasons for the sale were rising costs and increasing health problems.

When talking about why they were selling the track, Ron Wimmer said, “It wasn’t our plan to sell until I got very sick last year. The decision was basically made at Madison Hospital.”

Following the final race, fans were invited to walk the quarter-mile track one last time.

After the walk — racing legends like Dave Marcis and Mark Martin signed autographs.

The Wimmers want to thank all the fans and drivers who have supported them throughout the years.
