Sha’Carri Richardson edges Olympic champion Julien Alfred to Zurich Diamond League title

The U.S. world champion came back from a slow start to ease past second-placed Alfred in the final 10m, reversing the result from the Paris 2024 final.

In an exciting women’s 100-meter sprint, Sha’Carri Richardson defeated Julien Alfred on Thursday, September 5, at the Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League track and field tournament. Once again, it was the Saint Lucian who moved the fastest in their first meeting since the Paris 2024 final on August 3 at the Stade de France, where Alfred defeated Richardson to become her country’s first Olympic winner.

Due to heavy rain that started an hour before the meet, the track at Letzigrund Stadium was damp, thus 2023 world champion Richardson started the race slowly but ultimately found her best speed, easily outpacing her rivals to win in 10.84. In a reversal of the Olympic final, Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain put on an incredible run to round up the podium in third place with 10.89. Alfred came in second with 10.88.
