Sha’Carri Richardson’s Jamaican training mate Alana Reid was in a class of her own as she obliterated a strong field to win the women’s 100m title at the ongoing World Under-20 Championships in Peru, Lima.
Reid was off to a great start in the heats, clocking an impressive 11.46 seconds to cross the finish line. She extended the winning streak to the semifinal where she dominated, clocking 11.44 seconds to win the race.
In the final, the 19-year-old was no fluke as she stamped authority, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.17 seconds. Coming in second in the race was Adaejah Hodge who clocked a stunning 11.27 seconds.
Kishawna Niles rounded up the podium, clocking an impressive time of 11.37 seconds to cross the finish line.
Reid was fresh from competing at the Paris Olympic Games. The Jamaican youngster was part of the women’s 4x100m relay team that placed fifth in the French capital.
At the Jamaican Olympic trials, Reid faded to a sixth-place finish in the women’s 100m race won by two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson. Tia Clayton and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished second and third respectively.
South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza won the men’s race in great fashion, crossing the finish line in a time of 10.19 seconds. Puripol Boonson finished second in a stunning 10.22 seconds as another South African Bradley Nkoana completed the podium in 10.26 seconds.
During the previous World Under-20 Championships in 2022 in Cali, Colombia, Tina Clayton won the women’s 100m race while Letsile Tebogo claimed top honours in the men’s race. Tebogo continued the winning streak in the men’s race with a commanding 200m victory at the Paris Olympic Games.
