David Gilmour has released a new track, taken from his upcoming album, titled ‘Dark And Velvet Nights’ – listen below.
The song comes ahead of the release of ‘Luck and Strange’, which is due to come out on September 6. This will be the former Pink Floyd member’s first album of new material in nine years.
‘Dark And Velvet Nights’ is a groovy rock track, written by Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson, which soundtracks their love.
It comes with a music video directed by Gavin Elder, in which Gilmour plays the song alongside his band. Watch :
In a statement about the track, Gilmour said: “The music sprang out one day. It was so exciting to have come across this groove.
“Polly had given me a beautiful poem for our wedding anniversary, which was sitting on the desk right next to me, so I picked it up and sang it on the track, to hear what it would sound like with words. I played it to Polly, and she said, ‘Lovely, great, I’ll need fiddle with it a bit.’ So she added a couple of verses, and there it was — very serendipitous.”
Gilmour is due to perform several concerts this year, marking his return to the stage for the first time in eight years. It includes five shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London – you can find your tickets here.
Gilmour has recently said that he believes ‘Luck And Strange’ is the “best” music he has made since Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’.
Speaking to Prog Magazine (via Guitar World), Gilmour said: “It’s over 50 years now since ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’. My feeling is that this album is the best album I’ve made in all those years since 1973 when ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ came out.”
