Massimo Luongo’s heartfelt message following Sheffield Wednesday departure
Massimo Luongo has posted an emotional thanks to Sheffield Wednesday and its fans following his departure. The 29-year-old spent three seasons at Hillsborough before his release was confirmed in May.
The Australian suffered with multiple injuries during his time in South Yorkshire, featuring 73 times for the Owls and registering just four goals and five assists. The club confirmed in May that Luongo – along with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Joe Wildsmith – declined new contracts with the club and would leave come July 1.
Those departures became official yesterday, with the midfielder admitting on his social media that he ‘loved every minute’ of his time at the club and thanking the ‘exceptional’ Owls fans.
My time at Sheffield Wednesday is over.” Luongo wrote on his Instagram. “Its been an incredible few years for me which had its ups and downs but I have loved every minute of it. Thank you to the fans for being exceptional. An atmosphere at Hillsborough I will never forget. Thank you to @swfcofficial for the passed 3 seasons. I wish the club, the staff and all the players the very best of luck in the future.”
Luongo has gone on trial with Championship outfit Reading, according to the Reading Chronicle , as one of a host of player’s training with Paul Ince’s side over the summer. His decision to move on from Wednesday may be in part due to his hopes of a trip to Qatar later this year, with the midfielder looking to break back into the Australia squad after they qualified for the World Cup.
Ravaged by injuries, he failed to feature regularly for the Owls but had a significant influence on the team during the latter stages of last season. His presence in midfield alongside Barry Bannan and George Byers helped Darren Moore’s side finish fourth, although they were beaten in the playoff semi-finals against eventual promoted side Sunderland.
