Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane on why he ‘was surprised’ the Brazilians signed Kobamelo Kodisang from Europe

Mamelodi Sundowns signed Kobamelo Kodisang in July, giving the 24-year-old a five-year contract.

That saw Kodisang dumping his European career where he was turning out for Portuguese Primeira Liga side Moreirense.

Previously, he also played for Sporting Braga and Sanjoanense in Portugal but he is now back in the Premier Soccer League, a move which caught Sundowns captain Themba Zwane by surprise.

WHAT ZWANE SAID

“I was surprised, I was not following him that side. But I was surprised when he came back,” said Zwane as per FARPost.

“But he’s a good player. We’re happy that he took that decision and came back to try to win us trophies.

“It shows that they [Mamelodi Sundowns] want quality players and a quality squad so that we can compete. He can dribble and create those goals.”

What might also have surprised Zwane is Kodisang’s decision to head back home when he was a regular for Moreirense.

The former Bidvest Wits star featured in 31 Primeira Liga matches last season and started 19 of those as he looked to have cemented his place in the team.

But he came back home in a move that is, however, expected to bring him closer to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

Kodisang’s focus now is to make himself a regular at Sundowns as the 2024/25 season is about to start.

Enjoying more playing minutes could attract Broos and get him into the Bafana fold after last playing for the national team in September 2023.
