Adam O’Brien’s incredible campaign with Newcastle last season has seen him rewarded with a three-year contract extension which could make him the longest-serving coach in Knights history.

The 46-year-old, who took over from predecessor Nathan Brown four years ago, was on the chopping block mid-way through last season before the club’s remarkable turnaround.

The Knights went on a nine-game winning streak to climb from within the bottom four on the ladder to finish in fifth spot.

They then edged the Canberra Raiders 30-28 in the first week of finals on home soil before their fairytale ride came to a crushing end in Auckland against the Warriors in week two.

It marked the third time in four years that O’Brien has led the Knights into the finals.

Adam O’Brien contract extension completes remarkable turnaround

Following the mid-season dismissals of Anthony Griffin and Justin Holbrook last year, O’Brien admitted he was feeling the heat.

“I understand that we’re in the business of winning footy games and usually if you’re not in the top eight, then it’s hunting season for you,” O’Brien said after the Knights failed to overcome heavily depleted Roosters and Panthers sides which left them languishing in 14th spot on the ladder.

“I’ve probably been separated from the herd even more now.

“I get that there’s probably a target on me but sitting around worrying about it all day is not going to help the footy team. It won’t help the players.

“You can’t ignore it. But I won’t let it consume me because I can’t. I’ve just got to crack on with it and fight my way out of it.”

Captain Kalyn Ponga then promptly sparked a 10-game winning streak as the Knights put 66 unanswered points on the Bulldogs, while also beating Melbourne, Canberra, South Sydney and Cronulla.
