The New York Mets are planning to sign catcher Logan Carter to a major league deal but are awaiting a physical from the 29-year-old. There is a chance that he might not join the active roster, as he has options. But most likely, he will land a spot on the 40-man roster. For the deal to go through, the Mets must make room available for him.

Porter would be a unique signing for the Mets as he has an exciting story in his baseball career. Porter is a walk-on at Dixie State who went undrafted and signed as an affiliate bullpen catcher. Most of his career has been in the minors, but he officially made his MLB debut last season. He has spent time with the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Giants. He was an undrafted free agent with the Royals back in 2018. His time with the Giants has been brief, as he signed with them last month but then opted out in his clause this week. In his MLB experience with the Royals, there is a small sample size of only 13 games.

At the end of last season, he was non-tendered and then found himself once again with the Royals through a minor league contract. Carter doesn’t only have experience as a catcher; he also has played first base. The Giants had the chance to keep him but decided not to, and now the Mets can place him on their roster. His numbers in the minors have been more eye-opening compared to his numbers in the majors. Overall, his numbers have been sufficient enough to get attention from the Mets. With the Crowns, he successfully slashed .319/.428/.575. This year, he slashed .293/.390/.500, but he didn’t play consistently. It’s no wonder the Mets have had him on the radar, as his BB % and K % were both promising last season.

New York Mets Catcher Situation

The Mets currently have two catchers on their roster: Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens. Both have been getting the job done defensively, and Torrens has recently been a new addition to the team. However, both are the only two catchers on the roster for the Mets, so if one of them were to get hurt, the Mets would need backup options. This is where Carter comes into play. Carter can also be seen as a utility player because he has experience as a third baseman. It is always eventful and valuable when a player can move around and be utilized in different positions. Especially if a player becomes injured, it is always handy to expand the roster.
