ew months ago, it looked like New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso was going to be one of the best player traded this year’s deadline.

The Mets endured an atrocious start to the 2024 season, and at the beginning of June, they were 11 games under .500. They appeared well on their way to a trade deadline sale, and impending free agent Alonso would have been atop the list of players to go.

However, the Mets have completely turned their season around (just as , and entered the All-Star break at 49-46, firmly in third place in the National League Wild Card race.

All signs now point to the Mets buying, and Alonso would almost certainly be a part of their plans to compete for a postseason spot in 2024.

These are strong words from Alonso, an impending free agent who could raise his value by going to another team and potentially adding an interested suitor in his offseason sweepstakes. However, he made it clear how much he loves being in New York, and, moreover, is excited about a second-half postseason push.

“I’m really excited. We’ve been playing great team baseball. It’s been so fun and the vibes are pretty immaculate right now in Queens.” Alonso said. “We have a lot of good things going and I’m just really excited to get to compete and keep continuing in a positive trend with this group. We’ve been a super resilient bunch and now we need to keep being where we’re at.”
