New Zealand Warriors extend contract of local talent

He made his NRL debut on the weekend against the Bulldogs.

The New Zealand Warriors have revealed that they have extended the contract of one of their top local players, with an eye towards the future.

Leka Halasima, who made his NRL debut this past weekend against the Canterbury Bulldogs, has an extension with the Warriors that will keep him on until at least the end of the 2027 campaign. He is now included in the club’s Top 30 roster as a result of the contract extension. He becomes the fifth player signed for the 2027 campaign with his re-signing.

The others are Nathan Cleary’s younger brother Jett Cleary, NSW Blues player Mitchell Barnett, top hooker Wayde Egan, new signing James Fisher-Harris, and 2023 Golden Boot winner James Fisher-Harris. When the teenage back-rower took the pitch for the first time over the weekend, he made an instant impression and demonstrated his potential to be one of the competition’s best forwards. He was named the club’s 2023 SG Ball Cup Player of the Year after rising through the ranks of the pathways programme. A native of Tofoa, Tonga, he averaged 125 running metres per game, scored two tries, and made 35 tackle breaks in six games.
