An armed man has been fatally shot by police after being intercepted in a stolen car on the Bruce Highway south of Gladstone.
A police spokesperson said the incident occurred at a rest area at Colosseum, 20 kilometres south of Miriam Vale, around 10.50am.
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a man had died.
- The ABC understands the man pulled a rifle on officers and shot first before police returned fire.
- A police spokesperson said an investigation was in its early stages and the two officers involved were being supported.”Welfare matters are being addressed for the officers involved in the incident,” the spokesperson said.
“Ethical Standards Command will investigate the incident with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.”
The Bruce Highway is closed in both directions at Gindoran, about 30km south of Miriam Vale and 5km north of John Clifford Way.
Long delays are expected and motorists in the area have been urged to use alternative routes.

This is one of those incidents that highlights the dangers of policing and that our police have to deal with every day,” he said.
“My understanding was there was an investigation into a number of criminal activities and an interception has been made and a person has been shot and died.
“I’ve got full confidence in our police; they’re well-trained, as are the police that are responding to do the investigation, they’re well-trained and will do so in a professional manner with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.”
