Newcastle United appear to be making moves in the transfer market as they look to shore up the defence ahead of the new season.
Eddie Howe has already brought in Lloyd Kelly but after Tosin Adarabioyo slipped through his grasp, the Newcastle boss is on the lookout for another defender.
The Magpies are being linked with a move for Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori who currently plays for Serie A side Bologna.
The 22-year-old is currently on international duty with Italy at Euro 2024 where he was the scorer of the only goal of the game last night as Spain beat Italy 1-0 … given that he’s Italian you see the problem there.
Newcastle have contacted Bologna over Riccardo Calafiori
Own goals happen, however, and it’s not the mark of a bad player, and to get into an Italian international defence he must be doing something right.
Last season for Bologna he played 30 games in Serie A and even managed to pop up with two goals and five assists, which isn’t bad for a centre-back.
Now Corriere di Bologna (via Tuttomercatoweb) are reporting that the Magpies have ‘in the last few hours’ made contact with Bologna over a move for Calafiori.
Newcastle face competition from Tottenham and Chelsea
Unfortunately, Newcastle aren’t the only Premier League side to have done so with Tottenham and, you guessed it, Chelsea, also throwing their hats into the ring along with Juventus who have been monitoring him for a while.
Previous reports have suggested that £25million could be enough to lure Calafiori away from Bologna so we expect quite the scrap on our hands.
While he hasn’t looked mind-blowingly good at Euro 2024, he has looked decent, and just 22, we can live with that, he’s got plenty of time to improve. Having him and Sven Botman as our defence for years looks pretty solid to us. Let’s hope we can get this done.
