Anthony Gordon hopeful Newcastle can secure signing of Premier League star amid reports the club have made a move for him
Anthony Gordon has praised his England teammate as the defender has been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer.
The summer transfer window opened for Premier League clubs last week, allowing clubs to negotiate transfers domestically.
Clubs will be able to make international deals from July 1, with the window closing on August 30 at 11pm.
And with the 2024 European Championships currently taking place in Germany, clubs across the continent will be watching to scout the best talent at the competition.
Newcastle United are one of the clubs that have reportedly been watching the tournament closely, and they haven’t looked too far with the Magpies reportedly considering a bid for England defender Marc Guehi.
Guehi was linked with a move to St James’ Park last summer, but ultimately decided to stay with current club Crystal Palace for the 2023/24 season, finishing tenth.
And speaking with talkSPORT, Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has praised his England teammate.
Gordon said: “He is top. He’s such a good player. I was glad the nation got to see him shine on that stage because he is such a lovely guy, and he deserves what is coming to him.
“I thought he was unbelievable in that game, considering his height compared to the strikers they had on. He won every header, he was aggressive, intercepting loads, and his main strength is his composure on the ball, he’s like a midfielder, so him and Stones at the back is a great partnership.
“I haven’t seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying I would love him to come, as I think he’s a top, top player and he would make us a better team.”
The Crystal Palace defender has once again been linked with a move to the Geordie club, with CaughtOffside reporting that both Newcastle and Arsenal are looking to open negotiations regarding a move.
Guehi has secured a surprise spot in England’s starting lineup after an injury to Manchester United’s Harry Maguire ruled him out of the tournament.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a stellar start to his Euro 2024 campaign as he helped England maintain a clean sheet in their opening fixture against Serbia on Sunday.
He has played just 12 times for England, after enjoying a career with England’s youth teams.
