Newcastle are now interested in £50m player who Jude Bellingham just called ‘brilliant’
Newcastle United are signing Lloyd Kelly, but they still want to bring in another centre-back.
The 25-year-old is due to officially become a Newcastle United player on July 1st, with Eddie Howe bringing in a player who he has worked with before and believes he can make even better.
Lloyd Kelly is a smart addition to the Newcastle squad, but he might not be the only defender who arrives at St James’ Park.
The Magpies also want a right-sided centre-back, and had initially looked to be signing Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer. Toon officials were confident of completing a deal, only for Chelsea to swoop in and sign the 26-year-old.
Now Newcastle will need to look elsewhere, and appear to be paying very close attention to the England side that is competing at Euro 2024.
Newcastle interested in Marc Guehi
Kieran Trippier was part of the back four that kept a clean sheet against Serbia on Sunday, and was joined by Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
Guehi was one of England’s best performers in Gelsenkirchen, and is now being linked with a move away from Crystal Palace.
According to Caught Offside, Newcastle United and Arsenal are interested in signing Guehi this summer.
They report that both clubs could make an opening bid for the 23-year-old, who Palace value at £50million.
That is reportedly deemed too much by Newcastle and Arsenal, but there is the added bonus that Guehi is open to leaving Selhurst Park, according to Caught Offside.
Guehi would be an amazing signing for Newcastle amid England heroics
Guehi would be some signing for Newcastle. He is a player who Dan Ashworth wanted at St James’ Park, and he would certainly be welcomed with open arms by Toon fans – especially after seeing his performance for England on Sunday.
The defender was ‘brilliant‘ against Serbia in the words of Jude Bellingham, playing with a real sense of calmness, despite there being a lot of fears over his inclusion. He was composed and confident in possession, which is exactly what Newcastle will be looking for when they bring in a player they likely expect to become Fabian Schar’s long-term replacement.
Guehi could fill that role, although he is also capable of playing as the left-sided centre-back. That is where he plays for Palace, and where he is being deployed by Gareth Southgate for England.
Newcastle move would be a shock this summer
But while Guehi would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, it is difficult to see him arriving on Tyneside.
While Newcastle will hope to pay less than £50million, it remains unclear how much the Magpies will have to spend. And the majority of the summer transfer budget looks set to go towards a winger, with Toon officials making a move for Michael Olise, who will cost £60million.
That might limit Newcastle’s ability to go big on a player like Guehi, whose price tag may soar if he continues to shine at Euro 2024.
It would be great to sign a player like Guehi, but it feels fanciful at this moment in time.
