Rivals confirm that Sheffield Wednesday transfer target will become free agent
A key transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday will become a free agent this summer, it has now been confirmed.
Sheffield Wednesday may soon have their first summer signing over the line, with free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer reportedly set to arrive.
The 36-year-old was recently released by Watford, with his seemingly imminent arrival at Hillsborough meaning that Cameron Dawson looks set to leave.
The free agent market may be one that the Owls place a lot of focus on this summer; with new contracts for Danny Rohl, Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, and potentially more yet, it might mean that resources for transfers are lessened.
But expect Dejphon Chansiri to still spend money on the right one or two players this summer, with names like Ike Ugbo wanted back at Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent basis.
Another name Rohl is keen to see return this summer is Ian Poveda.
Leeds United confirm Ian Poveda release
Poveda, 24, won the hearts of Sheffield Wednesday fans during a loan spell in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
He grabbed one assist in 10 Championship appearances and played a key role in the Owls’ eventual 20th place finish under Rohl.
There’s widespread interest in the Colombian with Sheffield Wednesday rivalled by the likes of Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland.
On Friday, Leeds United released their retained list, officially confirming that Poveda will become a free agent on July 1st.
Should Sheffield Wednesday pursue Ian Poveda transfer
Poveda returning would certainly go down well with Wednesday fans; not only did he provide quality and energy in the final third, but he was really exciting to watch too.
The only concern is his fitness. He missed the final five games of the season through injury, with injuries having plagued his last few years in the game.
If he comes in, Rohl will surely anticipate Poveda spending some time on the sidelines next season, and he’ll want other wingers with as much quality.
Whether that’d be affordable for the Owls remains to be seen; it might be that they have to pick between one of Poveda and Karamoko Dembele, who is another name linked.
But if Poveda returns on a free transfer this summer, then on the whole, it’d be a strong signing for Sheffield Wednesday.
