Report: £60m Newcastle transfer target opens talks with current club over new deal

Newcastle United have potentially been dealt an early blow in their summer transfer plans as top target has entered talks to stay put.

It’s shaping up to be a busy summer for Eddie Howe in the transfer market with several positions in need of bolstering and some in need of a refresh.

The Magpies went into last season with just two strikers in the squad and paid the price for being underprepared as Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak both suffered with injury issues leaving Howe very short on options.

That’s something Newcastle are hoping to avoid next season and as such are looking to recruit another centre-forward this summer.

Everton have opened talks over a new contract for Calvert-Lewin

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is said to be high on Howe’s wish list with a £60million move having been mooted in the media since last year.

However, TeamTalk are now reporting that talks have opened up between Calvert-Lewin and Everton over a new deal which would keep the England forward at Goodison Park for the foreseeable future.

It’s likely a bit of a blow to Howe’s plans, but judging by online reaction to stories linking DCL with Newcastle, not one that the Newcastle fans will be overly upset about.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is seen as a sideways move rather than an upgrade

Calvert-Lewin has been tagged by Newcastle fans as a younger Callum Wilson. On the surface that sounds pretty complimentary, but when you realise they’re more comparing his injury record than his goalscoring ability, it becomes a big less so.

Nobody is denying that Calvert-Lewin certainly knows where the back of the net is, despite undergoing droughts at Everton – but given how much The Toffees have been struggling of late, that’s hardly a shock – but it’s his injury record that is a huge concern.

The whole point of Newcastle bringing in a new striker this summer is to avoid the issues we faced this season when we had no striker fit, Calvert-Lewin’s record hardly inspires confidence in that regard, so we hope Howe has another option in mind.
