Kansas Jayhawks basketball lands walk-on commitment from local HS recruit

Kansas basketball has two scholarships to fill following the departures of former commits Labaron Philon and Riley Kugel. Jayhawks HC Bill Self is diligently looking through the transfer portal for the next potential addition. However, the coaching staff can still add walk-on players who do not take up a scholarship.

The same day Self announced former Cal State Northridge guard Chris Carter had entered the portal, KU added Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School senior Will Thengvall. The Wichita native will join the roster as a non-scholarship player for the upcoming season to bolster the Jayhawks’ walk-on corps.

Bill Self adds local HS recruit to Kansas basketball roster as walk-on

Thengvall, a native of Wichita, is not a slouch of a walk-on. He averaged 17.6 points per game and won the 5A boys Player of the Year award after a strong senior season. The 6-foot-4 guard will make his way to Lawrence this summer once he completes his high school classes and then officially join the team.

He joins Justin Cross, Wilder Evers, Dillon Wilhite, and Patrick Cassidy as walk-ons with eligibility remaining. Longtime Jayhawk Michael Jankovich graduated this past season. While it is not an addition that will make headlines, Thengvall should be a solid practice player who brings some competitive spirit to the walk-on group.
