Chelsea has reached an agreement to name former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach.
After dismissing Graham Potter on April 2, Chelsea has been looking for a new head coach. Frank Lampard will continue to serve as interim manager till the conclusion of the season. Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is unemployed after being fired by Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
After this season, caretaker manager Frank Lampard will over the reins to the 51-year-old Argentine, who is poised to make his Premier League comeback after being fired by Chelsea’s London rivals Spurs in November 2019. An announcement is anticipated later this week.
Sebastiano Pochettino, his son, Miguel D’Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Jesus Perez, Pochettino’s dependable backroom crew, are all prepared to accompany him to Stamford Bridge.
Graham Potter, who was fired at the beginning of April after less than seven months in charge, will be permanently replaced by Pochettino.
Chelsea is in the bottom half of the Premier League and will finish the season without a trophy, in addition to missing out on playing in Europe the next season, despite having spent £600 million in the past two transfer windows.
After leading Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 championship in 2022 and the French Cup the previous year, Pochettino was fired by the French team last summer. Since then, he has been unemployed.
Beginning in May 2014, the former manager of Espanyol oversaw Spurs for five years, although the north London team never brought home a trophy.
In addition to leading them to the 2015 League Cup final and a second-place finish in the 2016–17 Premier League season—both of which Chelsea won—he also led them to the 2019 Champions League final, which they lost to Liverpool in.
Paul Gilmour of Sky Sports News:
“The formal sign-off is still pending, but given that this agreement has been achieved, it is anticipated that this will just be a formality. And the fact that the manager is connected to Chelsea’s opponents, Tottenham Hotspur, is extremely bizarre, at least in English football.
“Mauricio Pochettino is aware that rebuilding Chelsea will be a significant task for him. Due to the large squad, the numbers must be significantly reduced.
One might argue that Harry Kane’s greatest strength is the morals he upheld during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, as we heard him discuss this week. He is skilled at uniting a group of players. He is a people person who knows how to inspire others and make the most of what he has.
“Chelsea has made significant financial investments, but he will also have money to spend, so you would anticipate that he will make adjustments and strengthen some positions. However, it has been evident over the last several weeks that he will succeed Chelsea as manager, and it looks like Chelsea has found their match in him.”
Given the kind of players Chelsea has signed, Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville believes Pochettino is the best person to lead Stamford Bridge permanently.
“Based on what [Chelsea co-owner Todd] Boehly has said, Chelsea have done their spending for the next three years – apart from signing a centre-forward,” Neville stated to Sky Sports in April.
“They will demand an additional £300 million if they choose to hire Diego Simeone, Luis Enrique, or Zinedine Zidane since they won’t be happy with some of the players they purchased earlier.
“They’ve got to appoint a manager who is going to inherit and like the squad that they’ve got – a lot of them are young – and I think that man is Mauricio Pochettino.”
