Newcastle ‘make decision’ on hijacking Tottenham’s James Maddison move after Tonali deal

Newcastle and Tottenham are both linked with a summer move for Leicester star James Maddison.

Newcastle are still willing to hijack Tottenham’s move for James Maddison, according to reports. The Leicester star is a top target for Spurs but the north Londoners could face strong competition from the Magpies despite their impending deal for Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle have made just one signing so far this summer. Young forward Yankuba Minteh has made the move from Danish side Odense BK but will immediately be loaned out to Feyenoord.

Eddie Howe is keen to add strength in depth following his side’s fourth-placed finish last season. Qualification for the Champions League is set to stretch Newcastle’s resources.

They are closing in on a deal for Italy star Tonali. The midfielder is set to become the club’s second-most expensive signing of all time after a £55million deal was agreed with AC Milan.

But he may not be the only high-profile midfielder through the doors at St James’ Park in this window. The Mail claims Newcastle could still lodge an official offer to Leicester to sign Maddison.

Maddison is expected to leave the King Power Stadium following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League last term. Tottenham are favourites to sign him, with Ange Postecoglou keen to add a player of his ilk to his squad.

But the report claims Newcastle’s move for Tonali has not ended their pursuit of Maddison. Tonali and Maddison are different types of midfielders but a lot will depend on what Newcastle can spend financially.

Leicester value Maddison at £60m despite him only having one year remaining on his contract. It is claimed Spurs’ initial offer is around £30m.
