July 13: RHP Drew Smithundergoes Tommy John surgery
As expected, Smith underwent surgery on Friday in Texas, ending his season. Doctors were unsure what type of surgery Smith would need, but he wound up receiving a full “Tommy John” elbow reconstruction, as well as a stabilizing internal brace. The typical recovery timeline for such a procedure is 12-18 months.
Smith, who can become a free agent in November, could miss all of next season — a fact that whichever team signs him will surely consider.
July 12: LHP David Petersonplaced on paternity list; RHP Eric Orze recalled from Triple-A Syracuse
Before Friday’s series opener against the Rockies, Peterson quickly showered, dressed and rushed to catch a flight to Denver, where he was hopeful to arrive in time for the birth of his second child. The Mets placed Peterson on the paternity list, which requires a one- to three-day stay. He will remain there through the All-Star break but will not miss a start.
The move gives the Mets an extra reliever in Orze, who allowed three runs without recording an out during his big league debut on Monday.
10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Sean Reid-Foley (right shoulder impingement)
Expected return: Late July
Reid-Foley, who missed the start of this season due to a right shoulder impingement, returned to the IL on June 22 with a similar injury. The move came three days after Reid-Foley’s average fastball velocity dipped about 3 mph in an outing against the Rangers.
Reid-Foley received a cortisone injection on June 24 and restarted a throwing program in early July, about a week behind schedule. He is set to throw a bullpen session on July 13, setting him up to return shortly after the All-Star break. (Last updated: July 12)
RHP Reed Garrett (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: Early August
An MRI taken July 10 on Garrett’s right arm revealed that he doesn’t have any structural damage, just inflammation in his elbow. Garrett could be on the injured list for 2-4 weeks, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. He said he plans to take things easy during the All-Star break with hopes of beginning to ramp up after that.
